St. Thomas Aquinas once said, "The Eucharist is the Sacrament of love: it signifies love, it produces love. The Eucharist is the consummation of the whole spiritual life." The true presence of Jesus within the Eucharist is a dogma of the Catholic Church, an irrefutable and eternal fact. Despite this, over thirty percent of Catholics do not believe in Jesus's true presence within the Eucharist.
In this painting, the Eucharist is painted in pure white, the only source of light in a black world. The priest holds the host reverentially in his hands, the light of Jesus reflected in his eyes, protecting him from the consuming darkness of the world. It is Gabriel's hope that this painting will aid Catholics in the belief in Jesus in the Eucharist.
