Harbors, and the ships they shelter, have been a source of nostalgia and emotion since man first sailed. These often unpicturesque and down-to-earth locations represent a gateway into the wild and adventurous seas. For this reason, artists have painted ships and their harbors since ancient times. Gabriel hoped to capture this sense of adventure through the mass of ships of all shapes and sizes. Behind the ships the small glimpse of a mountain top through the cloud symbolizes losing sight of the land, allowing the viewer to embark upon a voyage of their own.
