This painting depicts Our Lady of Divine Providence, a Marian apparition who appeared to St. Phillip Benizi in the eleventh century and provided him and his fellow friars with food in their time of need. In this painting, Mary appears strongly lit by the light from Heaven. This light is reflected from her face down into the face of the infant Jesus, lighting His face with a heavenly glow. This is meant to represent Our Lady's relationship with humanity as the mediatrix of all graces. In this role, Our Lady reflects God's grace and love down upon us as a loving mother.
